The interdisciplinary research project of the University of Europe for Applied Sciences explores the ecological, cultural, and social significance of the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea on the island of Borkum. The project aims to develop innovative perspectives for the protection and sustainable development of this unique habitat by bringing together science and art. Under the direction of Evelyn Solinski (UE Publishing Practices), Prof. Dr. Nina Röder (Photography), Prof. Dr. Iris Lorscheid (Data Analysis), Prof. Dr. Silke Heuse (Environmental Psychology), Prof. Jan Haux (Speculative Design), and Prof. Christian Meyer zu Ermgassen (Editorial Illustration), students from the fields of Photography, Illustration, Film & Motion Design, Communication Design, Digital Business & Data Science, and Psychology examined the Wadden Sea from diverse perspectives.
As part of the project, the book AM WATT was realized as a publication. The book brings together the multifaceted perspectives from science and art and represents an important contribution to the ecological and cultural reflection on the Wadden Sea.
The relevance of the publication AM WATT lies in the increasing urgency of advancing the protection of the Wadden Sea and other fragile ecosystems in the face of global climate change. The Wadden Sea is not only a unique natural heritage but also a key ecosystem for biodiversity and climate protection. The combination of scientific research with artistic reflection offers an innovative approach to making complex environmental issues accessible to a broad audience. In times of climate change, when sustainable solutions are urgently needed, the book provides concrete recommendations for tourism and sets creative impulses for ecological transformation. It fosters awareness of the value of nature and encourages responsible action – both on an individual and on a societal level.

How can the book as a body and curated space be expanded in a series of authorship practices in the context of new media, and conceptualized along the concept of the archive in a repository? How can we rethink the concepts of reading, publishing, and editing in relation to space, time, and the spirit of the times?
As distribution channels in science and knowledge transfer are changing, the concept publisher UE Publishing Practicesaims to collect, explore, and develop innovative forms of academic and artistic-scientific publication and communication within a transformative publishing practice. With an inclusive approach, UE Publishing Practices seeks to offer a platform for university members and students to present their scientific and artistic-scientific research to a broader audience using hybrid methods. The institution collaborates with authors, designers/artists, editors, and publishers, acting as a contemporary guide through the publishing process.
ArchivUE, the first university press of UE Publishing Practices, and the Digital Exhibition Platform are part of the research project UE Hybrid Publishing Practices, which is continuously developed with a research team of students and academic members. It is Initiated by Evelyn Solinski, the researcher, founder and publishing director of UE publishing practices.
